If you're setting up a WhatsApp Business account, it's important to choose a display name that accurately represents your business and complies with WhatsApp Commerce and Business policies. In this article, we'll go over some tips for choosing the right display name and explain how it will appear to users.

How to Choose a WhatsApp Business Display Name?

Choosing a WhatsApp Business Display Name is a crucial step, as it's the first thing that customers will see when they receive messages from your business. Here are some tips for choosing the right name:

  1. Make it relevant to your business: Your display name should be related to your business and help customers identify your brand.
  2. Keep it short and simple: A shorter name is easier to remember and type, and a simple name is easier to understand.
  3. Comply with WhatsApp policies: Your display name must comply with WhatsApp's Commerce and Business policies. Don't use names that violate these policies, or you risk having your account suspended.

WhatsApp Display Name Ideas & Guidelines

Now that you know what to keep in mind when choosing your Display Name, here are a few WhatsApp Display Name Ideas & Guidelines:

1. Accurate representation of your business: Your WhatsApp Display Name should represent your business identity. It should clearly indicate the product, service, or department of your business. If it's a test or demo account, it still needs to have a clear association with your business, reflected in the display name. For example, a good display name for a cupcake bakery owned by Jennifer would be "Jennifer's Cupcake Bakery". However, WhatsApp will reject display names that are generic, like "Beer", or a generic geographic location, like "India". Additionally, slogans or long descriptions should be avoided. If your organization is affiliated with a government, you will need to get specific approval from WhatsApp.

2. Using all CAPITAL LETTERS in your display name is not recommended. The display name should follow proper grammatical capitalization as per your business name. For instance, if your business name is "SUNNY DAY FLORIST", using the same name in all caps as your display name will not be approved. The correct display name should be "Sunny Day Florist". However, if your business is already branded using all caps, then using it in your display name would be acceptable.

3. Be mindful of spacing in your display name. The spacing used in your display name should not differ from the spacing used in your business name. For example, If your business name is "Sunny Day Florist", then your display name should also be "Sunny Day Florist". Do not use any extra characters, symbols, emoticons, or punctuation marks in your display name. Names like "Sunny_Day Florist*" or "Sunny Day*Florist!" will be rejected.

4. Don't add any extra words to your brand's display name unless they indicate country or region, department or function, or test or demo accounts. For example, "Li'l Cupcakes Mexico" or "Li'l Cupcakes Customer Support" is acceptable, but "Li'l Cupcake Official Account" isn't.

5. A display name must contain at least 3 characters. For example, if your business name is "PT Sir", then the display name "PT Sir" is acceptable, but only "PT" isn't, as "PT" has fewer than three characters.

6. URLs should not be included in display names. For example, "SunnyDayFlorist.com" is not acceptable.

7. Your WhatsApp display name must have consistent branding with external sources like your company's website. This means that your display name should be exactly the same as your branding on your website. For example, if your display name is "Fresh Produce Cold Pressed Juices", then the same should be visible on your website. Abbreviations or short forms are not allowed.

8. Your display name needs to have an obvious relationship with your business. It should be mentioned on the company website or in references in outside media. If the relationship between the business and the brand is not clear, you should indicate it using "by [business name]", such as "Accessories by Yogi Fashion". Additionally, your company's display name shouldn't contain the name of a management company or any other third party. For instance, you cannot use the display name "Sunlight Agency for Jolanda's Beer Mugs".

How Will Your Display Name Appear on WhatsApp?

When it comes to WhatsApp Business accounts, the way your Display Name appears to users can depend on whether your account is a standard WhatsApp Business API Account or an official Green Tick Verified WhatsApp Business Account.

For a standard WhatsApp Business API Account, your Display Name will appear to the above of your contact number, as shown below.

However, if you have an official Green Tick Verified WhatsApp Business Account, your Display Name will appear without a number on a user's screen, along with a Green Tick symbol, as shown below. This Green Tick serves as a direct acknowledgement from WhatsApp that your business is credible and trustworthy.

To become WhatsApp verified, you'll need to be a recognized business with organic media coverage. Paid media coverage won't count towards the verification process. Once your account is verified, you'll be able to enjoy the benefits of having a Green Tick next to your Display Name, which can help boost user trust and confidence in your business.
